When you attend your graduation ceremony you are required to wear the correct Murdoch University academic regalia. You can also wear other regalia, if entitled to do so, for awards completed elsewhere.
You will need to wear your regalia correctly to represent the award you are receiving. For awards not named, regalia is trimmed in the colour of the field of study.
All graduates wear a maroon gown. The doctoral gown is trimmed with coloured satin.
The gown is sized according to your height provided when you order your regalia. The gown is open at the front and your arms are to go through the full length of the sleeves.
Mortar board or bonnet
The mortar board is worn by all graduates except doctoral graduates. Doctoral graduates wear the Tudor bonnet.
The tassel is placed across the front left quarter.
The mortar board is placed on the head with the longer point on the cap, worn to the back of the head.
Generally, the mortar board and bonnet are worn when standing, and removed when seated.
Hood and sash
The hood or sash is trimmed or lined with coloured satin to represent the graduate's field of study.
The sash is worn by diploma and certificate graduates. It is placed around the neck and draped down each side of the gown opening.
The hood is worn for all bachelor degrees including honours, masters and doctoral degrees. The hood attaches to the gown by velcro strips on the shoulders.
It is draped down the back with the point of the hood folded to indicate the degree:
- Bachelor – the hood is trimmed with satin and folded to the right
- Honours – the hood is trimmed with satin and folded to the left
- Masters and doctoral graduates – the hood is fully lined with satin and draped centrally down the back
