Bushfire safety

Murdoch University boasts beautiful campuses, many of which are set amidst natural bushland, making it a truly distinctive and inspiring place for study and work. With these surroundings comes a responsibility to remain extra vigilant during bushfire season.

By staying aware of fire danger ratings, reporting smoke or fire immediately, and familiarising ourselves with campus emergency procedures, we can help protect our community and preserve the beautiful environment we are so lucky to enjoy.

How we reduce the risk of bushfires

Murdoch University takes preventative measures to prevent bushfires from occurring on our campuses by manually reducing fire-prone vegetation near buildings and maintaining our firebreaks in the bushland reserves.

How you can be prepared and keep safe

  • Familiarise yourself with information on the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) website, including advice provided on fire danger ratings during bushfire season (December to April).
  • Avoid accessing bushland reserves during days of High to Extreme fire danger, very hot days and/or very windy days.
  • Do not smoke near any of the bushland areas. Smoking is only permitted in designated areas around our campuses.
  • Follow the instructions from emergency personnel, including Fire Wardens, during a bush fire.
  • Maintain awareness of emergency exits and assembly points

You may also:

  • Install the Emergency WA App and set up custom watch zones to receive alerts for the areas where you work, live and study.
  • Create an Emergency Plan which can also be created through the Emergency WA App (iOS or Android).
