Murdoch Mettle (Boodiyar Djena Biddi) is a co-curricular program designed to help you explore the knowledge, perspectives, and responsibilities that underpin a more just and sustainable society.

Through Mettle, you will engage with three interconnected themes that increasingly shape study, work, and community life: Sustainability, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and First Nations.

Mettle provides a structured space to reflect, learn, and develop judgement in a supportive environment, helping you connect your studies to broader social and environmental challenges.

About the program

The program brings together established learning experiences delivered by specialist teams across the University. These experiences are designed to deepen cultural capability, ethical awareness, and sustainability literacy, while encouraging reflection on responsibility, inclusion, and care for Country.

You will engage with learning aligned to Murdoch University’s strategic themes:

  • Sustainability
Understanding environmental, social, and ethical sustainability, and how values and decision-making shape long-term outcomes.
  • Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
Exploring inclusion as practice, including lived experience, systems, and responsibility.
  • First Nations
Learning about Country, history, and Indigenous knowledges, and how they inform cultural responsibility and sustainability.

Martin Breuckner
Fundamentally, Murdoch Mettle is about supporting good and active citizenship by giving students opportunities to develop skills vital for solving complex global problems and that are also in high demand by employers world-wide.
Dr Martin Brueckner

By completing Mettle, you'll benefit by:

  • developing understanding of how inclusion, Country, and sustainability are connected
  • building cultural capability and ethical awareness relevant across disciplines
  • strengthening your ability to navigate complex social and environmental issues
  • gaining language and confidence to articulate your values and capability to employers.

Students who successfully complete all components of Mettle receive formal recognition via the Boodiyar Djena Biddi (Murdoch Mettle) Certificate.

Program structure

To complete Murdoch Mettle, students take part in a series of hands‑on learning experiences, including:

  • Ally Training — explore Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
  • Beyond Black and White — learn about First Nations perspectives
  • Connecting Country — engage with First Nations knowledge and culture
  • Understanding Sustainability — build practical sustainability knowledge
