Supplementary and deferred assessments

Supplementary assessments

A new Student Assessment Support Procedure is in place for teaching periods starting from 1 January 2026. Where Supplementary Assessment is NOT permitted in a unit, it will be specified in the Unit Outline and apply to all students enrolled in the unit.

A student may be granted Supplementary Assessment where they have demonstrated sufficient achievement of the unit learning outcomes to warrant an additional opportunity:

  • The student has attempted required assessments for the unit and for graded units, the final mark for the unit is between 45% and 49%
  • For ungraded units, the student’s performance is close to the requirements for a pass.

Supplementary Examinations (SX)

  • The supplementary assessment is in the form of an examination
  • The supplementary exam timetable will normally be published within one week of the release of the results

    Supplementary Assessments (SA)

    • The supplementary assessment is in a form other than an examination
    • Supplementary assessments will be scheduled by the unit coordinator

Supplementary Assessment (SA) details are now provided directly in LMS

Supplementary Assessment letters will be issued automatically for any approved SA grade. The letters will be issued the day following the entry of the grade, and a copy will be sent to the Unit Coordinator for their action and records.

These letters will advise students that they are eligible for a supplementary assessment, students will be directed to the LMS site in order to obtain all information UCs are to use their myMurdoch Learning (LMS) sites to communicate the details of the supplementary assessment, and to provide the ability for student submissions.

What do you need to do?

Setting up Supplementary Assessment(s) in the LMS requires several steps to ensure it is configured appropriately and accessible exclusively to the intended student(s).  The following guide outlines everything you need to do and provides links to related step-by-step guides. Implementing Supplementary Assessments in LMS.

Supplementary Assessment details in LMS can be as simple as directing students to watch for an email from the Unit Coordinator or housing the full additional assessment in LMS, flexible to the needs of the Unit Coordinator.

    Deferred assessments

A student may be granted Deferred Assessment if illness or exceptional circumstances prevented them from completing an assessment and/or examination in sufficient time for a mark to be submitted to the relevant Results Committee meeting. Students registered under one or more of the approved Special Programs may also be eligible for Deferred Assessment subject to the provision of supporting documentation.

For more information, see Deferred Assessments.

    Exam timetables

The Exams and Assessment Office will draft, finalise and publish the timetable. The supplementary and deferred timetable will be published the same day results are released to students. After the Unit Coordinator submits the examination papers to the Exams and Assessment Office, the Office will arrange the printing of examination papers, and send (via courier) the examination papers and materials to be supplied by the University to the Transnational Partner.

The Transnational Partner will return the completed scripts of the supplementary and deferred examinations to the Exams and Assessment Office after the examination, and the Unit Coordinator will collect the scripts from the Office for marking, which usually takes place three to four working days after the scheduled day for the exam.
