What is a Major?
A major is your primary area of focus within a degree. It determines the core subjects you'll study and the skills you'll master.

Major overview

Organisations in every industry rely on computers. As a computer scientist, it will be up to you to help develop effective solutions, positively benefiting the world around us.

In this degree, you’ll learn how to think critically and problem solve, while exploring the theory, methods and systems used by the computing industry. By developing the skills and knowledge you need to design and develop revolutionary ideas, you’ll create concepts and technologies that can change the world.

You'll learn about algorithms, software design and implementation, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and computer systems and development, and will develop the unique ability to create and apply computer and software systems to solve real-world problems. Hear how Computer Science student Niamh is using these skills to pursue a career as a full-time programmer.

In the final year of your degree, you’ll take part in a professional practice project unit. This will include working in a team with other students and consulting with real clients to recommend, develop and implement new technologies to solve business problems.

To broaden your skills and career opportunities, you could study this major alongside another Bachelor of Information Technology major. You could also enhance your future prospects with great scholarships like the $15,000 Westpac Young Technologists Scholarship Program. This scholarship can lead to networking opportunities with industry professionals and career opportunities before you graduate.
