What is a Major?
A major is your primary area of focus within a degree. It determines the core subjects you'll study and the skills you'll master.

Major overview

Help people and organisations thrive with a major in human resources management

Are you a people person who enjoys helping others succeed? A career in human resources (HR) can give you the opportunity to shape workplace culture, support employee development and help organisations build strong teams. The Human Resources Management major within our Bachelor of Business develops the skills you need to manage people effectively and support organisational success.

You’ll explore how organisations attract, develop and retain talented employees while building positive workplace cultures. Topics such as recruitment, employee relations, performance management and workplace wellbeing will give you practical insight into how HR professionals support both people and organisational goals.

There’s more to our human resources major than theory. By integrating virtual reality (VR) and avatars into undergraduate HR learning, we are creating innovative opportunities for you to engage with realistic workplace scenarios and develop future-ready skills, by allowing you to practise interviews, conflict resolution and workplace scenarios in a safe, simulated environment. These immersive experiences help you to build confidence in managing real workplace situations.

Combining the Human Resources Management major with another Bachelor of Business major such as Accounting, Banking, Business Law, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Finance, Hospitality and Tourism Management, International Business, Management or Marketing will broaden your perspective and help you connect people strategy with wider business priorities.

Whether your goal is to lead organisational culture, support employee development or guide businesses through change, our major prepares you for a rewarding career in human resources.

3 reasons to study human resources management at Murdoch University

  1. Study with immersive VR simulations that let you practise real HR scenarios before you graduate.
  2. Gain industry experience through our Work Integrated Learning program, with opportunities to work on real HR projects or internships with organisations such as RAC Arena, local governments and community enterprises.
  3. Collaborate on business projects with students from other Bachelor of Business disciplines, building cross-functional teamwork skills that reflect how modern organisations operate.

What you’ll learn

  • Understand how organisations attract, recruit and retain talented employees.
  • Analyse employee relations, workplace policies and employment practices in modern organisations.
  • Apply strategies for managing employee performance, development and workplace wellbeing.
  • Develop leadership, negotiation and conflict-resolution skills for managing workplace challenges.
  • Examine how HR strategy supports organisational change, culture and long-term business success.

Flexibility was key for me, and Murdoch University's diverse range of study options gave me the perfect fit. I love the blended learning format, and their small class sizes and supportive faculty mean I'm never lost in the crowd. I feel like I can really thrive here.
