What is a Major?
A major is your primary area of focus within a degree. It determines the core subjects you'll study and the skills you'll master.

Major overview

Study an accredited engineering honours degree in a real control room environment

Modern industries rely on complex automated systems to operate efficiently, safely and at scale. In the Industrial Control and Automation Engineering Honours major within our Bachelor of Engineering Honours degree, you’ll develop advanced skills in designing, analysing and optimising these systems, while gaining hands-on experience in our unique, on-campus real-world engineering plant and dedicated control room

Throughout your engineering honours major, you’ll focus on control systems, instrumentation and intelligent automation technologies used across industrial and autonomous environments. You’ll explore how sensors, controllers and software integrate to monitor and manage complex systems, building expertise in control systems engineering and industrial automation systems.

You’ll also apply your knowledge across 450 hours of practical learning, which may include industry projects or placements, gaining valuable industry experience.

You can tailor your studies by combining the Industrial Control and Automation Engineering major with others including Electrical and Renewable Energy Engineering or Environmental Engineering, depending on your interests and career goals.

You’ll graduate with an internationally recognised engineering honours degree accredited by Engineers Australia, ready to begin your professional engineering career.

3 reasons to study engineering at Murdoch University

  1. Learn in a real engineering plant and control room, the only facility of its kind in a WA university, and gain hands-on experience with industry-standard automation systems.
  2. Five-star rating and #1 university in Australia for overall educational experience, skills development and teaching quality for Engineering and Technology by the Good Universities Guide 2026.
  3. Graduate with an internationally recognised Engineers Australia-accredited engineering degree that’s aligned with professional engineering standards.

What you’ll learn

  • Analyse complex control systems and industrial processes, including dynamic systems and real-time operations.
  • Apply advanced control systems engineering principles to evaluate performance, stability and reliability.
  • Integrate instrumentation, programmable logic controllers (PLC), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and embedded systems within industrial automation environments.
  • Use modelling, simulation and data-driven tools to optimise automation and system performance.
  • Design and implement complex automated systems for manufacturing, infrastructure and intelligent systems applications.

I use what I learned at Murdoch University every day. The field visits taught us how the industry really works – not just the technology, but what employers look for in people.
