What is a Major?
A major is your primary area of focus within a degree. It determines the core subjects you'll study and the skills you'll master.

Major overview

Solve real-world water and sustainability challenges with an accredited engineering honours degree

Water, waste and resource management are some of the most complex challenges facing modern infrastructure. Learn how to design systems that respond to these challenges in the Environmental Engineering Honours major within our Bachelor of Engineering Honours degree. Through hands-on experience in WA’s only on-campus real-world engineering training plant with a dedicated control room, you’ll apply engineering principles to real scenarios and develop solutions that make a measurable impact.

During your engineering honours major, you’ll explore environmental processes, water and resource management, and sustainable infrastructure, building expertise in environmental systems engineering and sustainability engineering. You’ll learn how to design solutions that balance technical performance with environmental responsibility across real-world contexts.

You’ll also complete 450 hours of practical learning, which may include industry projects or placements, applying your knowledge in real-world environments and gaining valuable industry experience before you graduate.

You can tailor your studies by combining Environmental Engineering with other majors including Electrical and Renewable Energy Engineering or Industrial Control and Automation Engineering, depending on your interests and career goals.

Our engineering honours degree is accredited by Engineers Australia, meets internationally recognised standards and prepares you for professional engineering practice and global career opportunities.

3 reasons to study engineering at Murdoch University

  1. Gain hands-on experience working on real-world environmental challenges in a real engineering plant and control room – the only one of its kind in a WA university.
  2. Five-star rating and #1 university in Australia for overall educational experience, skills development and teaching quality for Engineering and Technology by the Good Universities Guide 2026.
  3. Graduate with an engineering degree that’s aligned with professional engineering standards, accredited by Engineers Australia and recognised globally.

What you’ll learn

  • Analyse environmental systems, including water, energy and resource management processes.
  • Apply advanced environmental systems engineering principles to assess performance, risk and impact.
  • Use modelling and analytical tools to evaluate environmental outcomes and inform decision making.
  • Integrate sustainability engineering approaches into infrastructure and environmental systems.
  • Design and evaluate complex environmental engineering systems for real-world applications.

I use what I learned at Murdoch University every day. The field visits taught us how the industry really works – not just the technology, but what employers look for in people.
