What is a Major?
A major is your primary area of focus within a degree. It determines the core subjects you'll study and the skills you'll master.

Major overview

Design future energy systems with an accredited engineering honours degree

Energy systems are rapidly evolving, and engineers are at the centre of that transformation. When you study the Electrical and Renewable Energy Engineering Honours major as part of our Bachelor of Engineering Honours degree, you’ll develop advanced skills in designing, analysing and managing modern power systems, while gaining hands-on experience in a real-world engineering plant, dedicated control room and outdoor renewable energy test area – the only facility of its kind in a WA university.

As part of your engineering honours major, you’ll explore generators, transmission and distribution networks, renewable technologies and power electronic systems, building expertise in power systems engineering and smart energy networks. You’ll learn how to design reliable, efficient and sustainable power systems that respond to changing energy demands.

You’ll also complete 450 hours of practical learning, which may include industry projects or placements, applying your knowledge in real-world environments and gaining valuable industry experience before you graduate.

You can tailor your studies by combining Electrical and Renewable Energy Engineering with other majors including Environmental Engineering or Industrial Control and Automation Engineering to align with your interests and career goals.

Accredited by Engineers Australia, our engineering honours degree meets internationally recognised standards and prepares you for professional engineering practice and global career opportunities.

3 reasons to study engineering at Murdoch University

  1. Learn in our unique engineering plant, control room and renewable energy test area, gaining hands-on experience with the systems used across modern energy infrastructure.
  2. Five-star rating and #1 university in Australia for overall educational experience, skills development and teaching quality for Engineering and Technology by the Good Universities Guide 2026.
  3. Graduate with an Engineers Australia-accredited engineering degree, recognised globally and aligned with professional engineering standards.

What you’ll learn

  • Analyse electrical circuits, power systems and energy networks, including transmission and distribution systems.
  • Apply advanced power systems engineering principles to evaluate performance, stability and efficiency.
  • Design and model complex power systems, including smart grids and distributed energy networks.
  • Integrate renewable energy technologies into existing and emerging energy systems.
  • Apply protection, control and safety strategies in high-level electrical and energy systems.

I use what I learned at Murdoch University every day. The field visits taught us how the industry really works – not just the technology, but what employers look for in people.
