What is a Major?
A major is your primary area of focus within a degree. It determines the core subjects you'll study and the skills you'll master.

Major overview

Teach politics in secondary schools and inspire students to engage with democracy and public life

Politics shapes the decisions, policies and institutions that influence everyday life, defining how societies organise power and resolve complex issues. The Politics (HASS) Teaching major within our Bachelor of Education (Secondary Teaching) prepares you to teach Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) while helping students explore how political systems shape decisions, policies and public debate. You’ll develop the knowledge and classroom skills to teach HASS in secondary schools from Years 7 to 10, as well as politics for Years 11 and 12.

Throughout your HASS teaching major, you’ll learn from experienced and supportive educators as you explore topics such as Australian and international politics, public policy, political institutions and global governance. At the same time, you’ll learn how to guide classroom discussions, encourage informed debate and help students analyse political ideas, arguments and perspectives.

Using our SimLab™ virtual classroom technology, you’ll practise responding to real teaching scenarios in a simulated environment, building confidence in managing discussions, facilitating debate and navigating complex social issues.

You’ll then apply your skills during professional placements across a wide range of education settings, including metropolitan, rural and remote schools, as well as international, multicultural, hospital, private and state school environments.

As part of your secondary education degree, you’ll also select a second teaching area from English, Mathematics, Biological Science, Earth and Environmental Science or Secondary Education Support, expanding your expertise and increasing your employment opportunities after graduation.

By the time you complete your degree, you’ll have developed a professional online teaching portfolio showcasing your lesson plans, teaching resources and reflections, and gained the practical experience and confidence to begin a rewarding teaching career.
