What is a Major?
A major is your primary area of focus within a degree. It determines the core subjects you'll study and the skills you'll master.

Major overview

Transform your love of maths into a rewarding teaching career

Do you love solving problems and helping others understand how maths works? The Mathematics Teaching major within our Bachelor of Education (Secondary Teaching) helps you turn that passion into the skills to teach mathematics in secondary schools, including Years 11 and 12. You’ll develop the knowledge and classroom skills needed to help students understand mathematical concepts, patterns and problem-solving approaches.

Build your teaching confidence early in your teaching degree using our SimLab™ virtual classroom technology. You’ll practise managing classroom situations, leading discussions and responding to challenges before entering your first school placement. You’ll then apply these skills in real classrooms across a range of education settings, which may include metropolitan, rural or remote schools, as well as international, multicultural, hospital, private and state school environments.

As part of your secondary education degree, you’ll also select a second teaching area from Biological Science, Earth and Environmental Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, English, Physical Sciences or Secondary Education Support to broaden your teaching opportunities.

By the time you graduate, you’ll have created an online teaching portfolio showcasing your lesson plans, teaching resources and reflections to share with future employers.
