What is a Major?
A major is your primary area of focus within a degree. It determines the core subjects you'll study and the skills you'll master.
Major overview
Prepare to teach history in secondary schools
History encourages students to examine how past events, movements and ideas have shaped the societies we live in today. The History (HASS) Teaching major within our Bachelor of Education (Secondary Teaching) prepares you to teach Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) and guide students as they explore historical events and competing perspectives to better understand today’s world. You’ll develop the knowledge and teaching skills to teach HASS in secondary schools from Years 7 to 10, as well as History for Years 11 and 12.
During your HASS teaching degree, you’ll explore major historical developments and learn how to help students interpret sources, evaluate evidence and understand differing historical perspectives. You’ll also build practical classroom skills, including how to design engaging lessons, lead discussions and encourage students to analyse evidence and interpret historical perspectives.
Using our SimLab™ virtual classroom technology, you’ll practise responding to realistic classroom scenarios in a simulated environment, helping you build confidence in leading discussions, managing classroom dynamics and adapting your teaching strategies.
You’ll then apply what you’ve learned during professional placements across diverse education settings, which may include metropolitan, rural or remote schools, as well as international, multicultural, hospital, private and state school environments.
As part of your secondary education degree, you’ll also select a second teaching area from English, Mathematics, Biological Science, Earth and Environmental Science or Secondary Education Support, broadening your expertise and improving your employment opportunities after graduation.
By the time you graduate, you’ll have built a professional online teaching portfolio showcasing your lesson plans, teaching resources and reflections, and gained the experience and confidence to begin a rewarding teaching career.
