What is a Major?
A major is your primary area of focus within a degree. It determines the core subjects you'll study and the skills you'll master.

Major overview

Major in history and build skills to analyse the past and understand the present

Step beyond dates and events and uncover how history continues to influence the way we live, think and make decisions today. Study the History major within our Bachelor of Arts and you’ll investigate the people, movements and ideas that have shaped societies, gaining the skills to interpret the past and apply those insights to contemporary issues.

Throughout your history major, you’ll explore different periods, places and perspectives, examining how historical narratives are constructed and contested. You’ll learn to analyse evidence, evaluate sources and develop well-supported arguments, building a deeper understanding of how the modern world has been shaped over time.

You’ll learn from leading academic experts in the field while receiving personalised mentorship, supporting your development as a researcher and critical thinker and building confidence in analysing complex ideas and communicating them clearly.

You can tailor your Bachelor of Arts to your interests and career goals by combining this historical studies major with other arts degree majors. Pair History with Philosophy to strengthen your critical thinking, or with English and Creative Writing or Theatre and Creative Production to bring historical narratives to life. You can also combine your studies with Politics and International Studies or International Aid and Development to understand how history shapes policy and global issues, or with Sociology, Community Development or Sustainable Development to examine how past events influence contemporary societies. Broaden your perspective further with Asian Studies, Indonesian or Japanese, or apply your knowledge in heritage and cultural contexts with Tourism and Events.
