What is a Major?
A major is your primary area of focus within a degree. It determines the core subjects you'll study and the skills you'll master.

Major overview

Learn to teach geography and business in secondary schools

Understanding how people interact with places, economies and environments is central to Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS). The Geography and Business & Enterprise Teaching major within our Bachelor of Education (Secondary Teaching) prepares you to teach these subjects while helping students explore the systems that shape societies and communities. You’ll develop the knowledge and classroom skills to teach HASS in secondary schools from Years 7 to 10, as well as Geography and Business for Years 11 and 12.

Throughout your HASS teaching degree, you’ll study human geography, economic systems, global development and environmental change. At the same time, you’ll learn how to design engaging lessons, guide classroom discussions and help students analyse social, business concepts, global development and environmental change using evidence and critical thinking.

Using our SimLab™ virtual classroom technology, you’ll practise responding to real classroom scenarios in a simulated environment, building confidence in classroom management, facilitating discussions and adapting your teaching approach.

You’ll then apply your learning during professional placements across a wide range of education settings. These may include metropolitan, rural or remote schools, as well as international, multicultural, hospital, private and state school environments.

As part of your secondary education degree, you’ll also select a second teaching area from English, Mathematics, Biological Science, Earth and Environmental Science or Secondary Education Support, broadening your expertise and improving your employment prospects after graduation.

By the time you complete your degree, you’ll have built a professional online teaching portfolio showcasing your lesson plans, teaching resources and reflections, and gained the practical experience to begin a rewarding teaching career.
