What is a Major?
A major is your primary area of focus within a degree. It determines the core subjects you'll study and the skills you'll master.

Major overview

Study our unique forensic biology major and solve crimes using biological evidence

Forensic biology plays a vital role in modern criminal investigations, using scientific techniques to analyse biological evidence and identify individuals, reconstruct events and support just outcomes. Part of our Bachelor of Forensic Science, the Forensic Biology major is the only specialised forensic biology major in Western Australia, equipping you with the skills to work with biological evidence in real-world contexts.

Throughout your studies, you’ll build a strong foundation in biology, genetics and molecular science while learning how biological evidence is collected, preserved and interpreted. Your learning is shaped by current industry practices, with guest lectures and input from forensic experts at PathWest and ChemCentre.

With access to the Murdoch Health and Knowledge Precinct and the Australian National Phenome Centre, you’ll gain hands-on experience using laboratory techniques to work with DNA and other biological samples, developing the technical skills used in forensic laboratories.

You’ll also apply forensic techniques in simulated crime scene environments and develop courtroom skills by preparing and delivering an expert testimony report for a mock murder trial in a moot court, building confidence in presenting scientific evidence in legal contexts.

You can tailor your forensic science degree by combining Forensic Biology with Forensic Chemistry and Toxicology or Forensic Investigation to broaden your forensic science skillset and align your studies with your interests and career goals.

By the time you graduate, you’ll be equipped with the knowledge and practical experience needed for a forensic biology career. You can also progress your studies to apply for our Master of Forensic Science (Professional Practice), further expanding your expertise and career opportunities.
