What is a Major?
A major is your primary area of focus within a degree. It determines the core subjects you'll study and the skills you'll master.

Major overview

Mathematics is about so much more than numbers and equations. It’s about applying knowledge, thinking in creative ways and using reason and logic to solve problems in real-world situations.

If you want to help share life skills and knowledge with school students, this major will qualify you to teach maths to secondary students, including ATAR students in Years 11 and 12.

You’ll learn to work in a range of teaching environments and take your learning beyond lectures and tutorials through a range of practical placements.

3 reasons to study Education at Murdoch

  1. Before you start your first prac, you’ll be able to develop your teaching skills, practise dealing with challenging behaviour, and try parent teacher interviews and other situations by using SimLabTM technology, our virtual classroom that uses actors and avatars.
  2. Get essential experience in a range of practical placements which could include metropolitan, rural, remote, international, multicultural, hospital, private and state school environments.
  3. Build an online portfolio as part of your degree to share your teaching experience with future employers. You’ll also be able to select a second teaching area from English, Humanities and Social Sciences, Science or Secondary Education Support.

What you’ll learn

You'll be mentored by our team of experienced teaching professionals to become a confident, creative and flexible mathematics teacher. During your course, you'll build the knowledge and skills you need to meet your career and study goals. Some of the things you’ll learn include:

  • Discover how to become the kind of teacher who can really make a difference, with a strong grounding in learning, teaching and mathematics curriculum
  • Learn classroom management skills, including how to deal with challenging behaviour and make learning fun
  • Learn how to apply your theoretical learning in a range of practical settings
  • Explore ways to encourage your students to think creatively
  • Get inspired to stay curious about the world and commit to lifelong learning throughout your teaching career

Your future career

This course gives you the qualification you need to teach secondary students, including teaching mathematics to Year 11 and 12 ATAR students. You will also need to select a second teaching area from Science, English or HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences).
