If you’re passionate about a profession that focuses on keeping people moving and helping to improve quality of life, this postgraduate course will give you the qualification you need to work as an accredited Exercise Physiologist.

Develop, implement and manage physical activity and behavioural programs for healthy clients and clients living with a range of chronic conditions, as you explore how exercise can improve health and wellbeing.

Learn about the delivery of exercise, lifestyle and behavioural modification programs to help prevent and manage chronic diseases and injury.

You’ll learn how to provide physical activity and behavioural programs for clients with conditions as diverse as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, depression, cancer, arthritis, respiratory disease and many others. Plus, you'll learn leadership skills to work independently or collaboratively within healthcare teams.

Pursue a variety of roles in both public and private health care environments. As an Accredited Exercise Physiologist, careers could include: 

  • Hospitals, out-patient clinics, disability care and aged care facilities: providing chronic disease management, rehabilitation and health promotion
  • Private practice (including your own clinic or within larger allied health clinics)
  • Occupational/workplace injury rehabilitation providers: providing functional assessment and case management leadership
  • Sport Medicine teams: providing rehabilitation and health education to athletes of all levels
  • Community or not-for profit organisations: promoting physical activity and health education
  • University research, with further qualifications: advancing your career, increasing your research capabilities and strengthening your leadership skills

You will be qualified to provide exercise prescription and assessment, and you will be ready to educate and motivate clients to improve their health.

Professional accreditation

This course is accredited by Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) at the level of Exercise Physiology.

Professional recognition

Graduates of this course are eligible to apply to register with ESSA as an Accredited Exercise Physiologist.

Admission requirements

Entry into this course is restricted to those with a course weighted average of 60 in previous study and meet one of the following criteria: 1) Registered as an Accredited Exercise Scientist with Exercise and Sports Science Australia 2) Completed a course accredited at the level of Exercise Science with Exercise and Sports Science Australia within the last five years 3) Undertaken a Graduate Entry Assessment by Exercise and Sports Science Australia to the satisfaction of the Academic Chair. For Murdoch graduates completion of B1317 with a double major in Movement Science and Sport and Health Science OR, B1348 OR B1352 meets the requirements for point 2 above.

English Requirements

You must meet a minimum standard in English to study at Murdoch, which for most courses can be demonstrated by providing evidence that you have completed Year 11 and 12 in Australia at any level if you are a domestic student, or through either English proficiency tests, university preparation courses, English language courses, previous tertiary study or vocational education.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Everyone has a different path to university so if you’ve already completed formal or informal learning, you could receive advanced standing. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) can reduce the amount of study needed to complete your degree by giving you credit for certain units.

Formal learning can include previous study in higher education vocational education or adult and community education. Informal learning can include on the job learning, various kinds of work and life experience.

The first-year indicative fee is based on a typical full-time enrolment at Murdoch University of 24 credit points.

For domestic students, including Australian citizens, permanent residents and New Zealand citizens, the indicative fee is based on the applicable Commonwealth Supported fee.

Indicative fees for international students are based on applicable full fee paying rates.

The estimated, indicative fee covers tuition fees only, and certain additional fees and charges may apply, depending on the course and units you choose. It also does not take into account any scholarships or bursaries for which you may be eligible.

The estimated, indicative fee assumes no fee increases or indexation. Over time, fee increases or indexation may occur and will affect the estimate. If you are a full fee paying student, this may occur at the start of your second and each subsequent year of study. In the case of Commonwealth Supported students, this will occur for each new calendar year in line with Government policy.
