About the Speaker:

Dr Shaw completed a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts through Murdoch University in 2002. Having graduated with Honours and receiving a Dean’s Medal for academic excellence, he was admitted as a legal practitioner in the Supreme Court of Western Australia in February 2003. In 2013, Dr Shaw completed his PhD in the Law of Costs through Murdoch University, with the thesis entitled “The assessment of disputes about legal costs: A comparative analysis of the Western Australian and New South Wales regimes”.

As an academic at Murdoch University, Dr Shaw specializes in the Law of Costs, as well as Evidence, Contract, Civil Procedure and Trial Advocacy. Whilst Dr Shaw’s background is predominantly academic, he has had varied experience in practice as an employed solicitor, as a sole practitioner, as a consultant and as a migration agent. Dr Shaw joined Coulson Legal in April 2017 as a consultant, providing advice in particularly difficult areas of law in relation to costs. He also operates his own practice, SBM Legal, with a focus mainly on commercial litigation.
