The Bachelor of Education (Secondary Teaching) at Murdoch University will help you turn your passion into a career.

Upon successfully completing this course, you can apply for registration to teach at a secondary school level. Upon Graduation, you will have both a major and a minor teaching area, providing you a competitive edge with a variety of employers across Australia and overseas. You will develop an online portfolio throughout your degree which can be used to showcase your experience to future employers.

You will develop a broad and coherent body of curriculum knowledge and teaching skills, and an understanding of the principles and concepts in professional practice as a teacher or for professional roles in the education sector.

Secondary Teacher Education - Secondary Mathematics 7-10 (GradCert)

Graduate Certificate of Education
The Graduate Certificate in Education (Secondary Mathematics 7 - 10) is designed for qualified teachers who are interested in upskilling in this area. Core units include pedagogy, curriculum, mathematics and statistics.

Secondary Teacher Education - Secondary Science 7-10 (GradCert)

Graduate Certificate of Education
The Graduate Certificate in Education (Secondary Science 7 - 10) is designed for qualified teachers who are interested in upskilling in this area. Core units include pedagogy, curriculum, physics and chemistry.

Master of Teaching (Secondary)

The Master of Teaching (Secondary) will set you up with the specialist knowledge, skills and capabilities to succeed as a secondary teacher.

This course is a 1.75 year full-time (or 2.75 years part-time) initial teaching qualification for graduates who hold a Bachelor’s degree in a non-Education field relevant to teaching. On completion of this course, you will have the knowledge and skillset required to teach in secondary schools, or in a variety of other careers with an education focus.

You will undertake a major (years 7-12) and minor (years 7-10) teaching area focus from the following areas: Science, Mathematics, English, and Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS). Health and Physical Education are also offered as a discrete major/minor focus area combination.

Internships

Murdoch, in collaboration with its ‘Partnership Schools’, offers a wide range of nationally recognised internship programs that provide for up to a full year immersion experience in the school (Bachelor of Education and/or Masters of Teaching program). Murdoch is aware that not all PSTs are in a position to commit a whole school year to an internship, which is why we provide a range of other Professional Experience options for our students.

Professional Experience Overview - Bachelor of Education - Secondary

First Year
BED150 -5 days (paired placement) - 2 lessons developed in consultation with mentor teacher

Second Year

EDN2101 - 2 weeks (*Perth/Peel based) 1-2 lessons per day

Third Year
EDN305 (formerly EDN310) - 2 weeks - Undertake approx. 50% teaching load
EDN465 (Sport & Health Science) - 2 weeks - Undertake approx. 50% teaching load

Fourth Year
EDN4101 - 2 weeks - Undertake approx. 50% teaching load
EDN4103 (Sport & Health Science) - 10 days (distributed over 10 weeks) - Undertake approx. 50% teaching load
FPE1 Final Placement (part 1) - 3 weeks - Undertake approx. 50% teaching load
FPE2 Final placement (part 2) - 7 weeks - Undertake approx. 80% teaching load

*NOTE for external, rural and/or international students:
All students, including external students, rural students and international students, are required to undertake one 10 day block placement in the Perth/Peel metropolitan area. This is typically the 2nd placement. (Subsequent school placements may be completed near students' home base)
