Wheatbelt Primary & Secondary Internship

Thank you for showing interest in an Internship in the Wheatbelt in either a primary or secondary setting. The Wheatbelt network of schools are providing free accommodation and support for all interns. The Wheatbelt is also very accessible to Perth for those who need to remain connected to the metropolitan area.

Conditions of Appointment to an Internship

  • Applicants for the Internship are required to commit to a full school year, attached to a Wheatbelt school.
  • Applicants must be enrolled in the B.Ed course or Grad Dip Secondary at Murdoch University.
  • Interns will be considered full-time students at Murdoch University for the full academic year.
  • Interns will commence work at their assigned school on the first day of School Term 1 and finish on the last day of School Term 4. These dates do not coincide with the university academic year.
  • All necessary University units will be completed during the Internship. Assistance and time will be given on the school site.
  • All Interns will complete their final block placement at the school.
  • Interns will attend the School for up to two days per week for Term 1, Term 2 and Term 4 and full time for the Term 3 the school year.

Earn while you learn

Secondary Interns are eligible to receive the Department of Education stipend of $10,000 paid in fortnightly instalments. Country interns will also receive free or low cost housing during the year.

Primary interns can apply for funding through the Rural Teaching Program (RTP). This includes:

  • Funds to travel to location (equivalent of airfare);
  • Stipend of up to $295 p/wk during placement, subject to location;
  • Local accommodation (usually billeting) if needed;

*must be an Australian Permanent Resident (or New Zealand citizen) to qualify

Additional Information

  • Interns are awarded a Limited Registration through the TRB (Teachers Registration Board) in Term 4.
  • Interns with a Limited Registration (gained during Semester 2, of your internship) will be eligible to be paid for teacher relief at the school, when the opportunity presents, for the remainder of the year. It is expected that the majority of teacher relief in the school will be undertaken by Interns, at graduate level payment rate.
