What is a Major?
A major is your primary area of focus within a degree. It determines the core subjects you'll study and the skills you'll master.

Major overview

Study animal science at Australia’s only city-based university with an on-campus farm

As part of our Bachelor of Agricultural Science, the Animal Science major explores how modern livestock systems are evolving to meet the growing global demand for food and fibre – while facing environmental challenges and maintaining strong standards for animal welfare, sustainability and traceability.

Learning from experts who bring current research and industry experience into the classroom, you’ll examine how science, technology and ethical production practices are shaping the beef, dairy, sheep, pork and poultry industries. You’ll also gain practical experience in animal production through applied learning, industry projects and placements in farms and agribusiness.

Throughout your studies, you’ll gain a deep understanding of animal production systems, from breeding and nutrition to disease management and welfare outcomes. You’ll also investigate how emerging technologies are improving efficiency, resilience and transparency across food and fibre supply chains, and how research-driven innovation is translated into real industry practice.

With an undergraduate agricultural science degree specialising in animal science, you can pursue roles in private agricultural enterprises, government agencies, non-government organisations or research and development institutions. To broaden your career options, you can combine the Animal Science major with another major, such as Crop and Pasture Science, or pair it with Animal Health as a potential pathway to a veterinary science degree.

3 reasons to study animal science at Murdoch University

  1. Study alongside livestock in real production settings at Australia’s only metropolitan university with a campus-based farm.
  2. Learn from animal industry professionals, veterinarians and leading researchers, completing units from our internationally accredited veterinary program.
  3. Learn at the WA university rated five stars and ranked #1 for student support and learning resources for Agriculture and Environmental Studies (Good Universities Guide 2026).

What you’ll learn

  • Study livestock science and genetics across major animal production industries.
  • Apply principles of veterinary nutrition and animal toxicology to support health and performance.
  • Understand comparative mammalian biochemistry, structure and function.
  • Evaluate the animal production systems used in beef, dairy, sheep, pig and poultry enterprises.
  • Analyse how welfare, productivity and sustainability are balanced in commercial livestock systems.

Studying both Crop and Pasture and Animal Science gave me the opportunity to learn about all sectors of the industry. In my first year, I went on field trips, handled animals and spoke to people directly involved in agriculture.
