Birak Festival

Celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture at the free Birak Festival with music, markets, food and family-friendly fun at Murdoch University.

Join us on December 5, for the annual Birak Festival as we celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture during this free community event.

Relax into the summer evening and enjoy live music, markets, food stalls and free family-friendly activities in the heart of campus at Boola Katitjin. Bring your family, friends and colleagues to share in this vibrant celebration of community and culture. Everyone is welcome.

Why is it called the Birak Festival?
Birak marks the first summer of the Noongar seasonal calendar (December to January) and is symbolised by the colour red, representing heat, sun and fire.

As the weather warms and the sea breezes arrive, the landscape bursts into colour with candlestick banksias and western woody pears in bloom. Reptiles become more active and young magpies (koolbardi) learn to feed under the guidance of their parents.

Experience this special time of year through connection, culture and celebration.

Presented by the Pro Vice Chancellor First Nations Portfolio.
