Course overview

With over 10 years of experience teaching migration law, Murdoch University offers the Graduate Diploma in Australian Migration Law and Practice, recognised by the Office of Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA) as satisfying the required entry-level course for registration as a migration agent (registration also requires the Capstone exam and other criteria).

You don't need a law degree to get started — just the drive to make a difference. This course is open to all backgrounds, and equally valuable for legal practitioners ready to expand their practice. Led by leading academics and experienced practitioners, this course is practical, hands-on, and designed to prepare you for success in this challenging field.

Where it will take you

Upon completing the Graduate Diploma and passing the OMARA Capstone Assessment, graduates are eligible to register as an Australian migration agent.

  • Private sector firms providing corporate immigration service

Professional accreditation

Successful completion of the Graduate Diploma in Australian Migration Law and Practice provides students with part of the requisite knowledge requirements for registration as a migration agent with the Department of Home Affairs / Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA).

Internship Program

Undertake an internship with a host organisation including various law firms, government agencies and not-for profit sectors.

Admission requirements

A formal qualification that is recognised as the equivalent of an Australian (AQF Level 7) Bachelor degree (a cognate degree or non-cognate area). If no Bachelor degree, evidence of formal or informal learning or work experience determined by the Academic Chair to meet AQF 7 criteria.

English Requirements

You must meet a minimum standard in English to study at Murdoch, which for most courses can be demonstrated by providing evidence that you have completed Year 11 and 12 in Australia at any level if you are a domestic student, or through either English proficiency tests, university preparation courses, English language courses, previous tertiary study or vocational education.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Everyone has a different path to university so if you’ve already completed formal or informal learning, you could receive advanced standing. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) can reduce the amount of study needed to complete your degree by giving you credit for certain units.

Formal learning can include previous study in higher education vocational education or adult and community education. Informal learning can include on the job learning, various kinds of work and life experience.
