Murdoch University is seeking to ensure that all our students have the opportunity to access Work Integrated Learning (WIL) units during their studies. These specifically-designed units give students opportunity to learn how to integrate their learning with the practice of the workplace. WIL has also been recognised as an important way to help our students develop transferable skills; an understanding of workplace culture, effective teamwork, leadership and initiative-taking, effective workplace communication, interpersonal skills and self-confidence.
There are different expressions of WIL that can be incorporated into units, depending on the discipline and the place of the unit in the curriculum. There is support available to staff who are implementing WIL activities into their teaching including:
- Assistance in designing WIL learning activities and assessment items.
- Support in managing some of the processes associated with internships.
- Student preparation workshops and online modules.
- A growing library of resources being created and made available to staff.
The creation of a Murdoch University community of practice for Work Integrated Learning will be a new initiative in 2018.
