20th Annual International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot
Rotterdam 30 June – 5 July 2019
ANNOUNCEMENT OF RESULTS
The School of Law, Murdoch University is proud to organise IMLAM for the benefit of law students worldwide. This year Murdoch partnered with Erasmus University School of Law; it was IMLAM’s first time in continental Europe. Not only did Erasmus University provide a sterling venue and wonderful organisers for the competition, they simultaneously offered maritime workshops and seminars as well as social functions for the benefit of the attending arbitrators, lawyers, students and academics. It was an extremely stimulating and supportive environment for all concerned. The Rotterdam maritime community has been incredibly supportive and welcoming. We also thank the sponsors, arbitrators, memo judges, and our many colleagues who assisted with this competition.
A record 31 teams (140+students) participated in the 20th IMLAM moot in Rotterdam. We ran 77 moots involving a significant roster of 50+arbitrators.
The competition culminated in a first class grand final between University of Sydney (Claimant) and University of Queensland (Respondent). The semi and grand finals were held in the delightful historic District Court of Dordrecht. I thank the Court for hosting the finals in their beautiful courtrooms. My thanks to the presiding panel, consisting of The Hon. Justice Elizabeth Heneghan, Federal Court of Canada; The Hon. Justice Pauline Hofmeijer-Rutten, Rotterdam District Court/Amsterdam Court of Appeal; and Mr Mark Hamsher, Maritime Arbitrator, England.
The winner of the grand final was University of Queensland. As well as the prize sponsored by Minter Ellison, the team were awarded the Chris Douglas Championship Trophy, donated by the Douglas family. This new trophy remembers our colleague and staunch supporter of the moot, Chris Douglas, Partner of Minter Ellison. Chris sat on the grand final panel in 2018. He lost his battle with cancer later that year, at the age of 37. Chris was a Queenslander, so we know he would have been delighted that the University of Queensland is the first recipient of that trophy.
We are already looking forward to 2020 – our next competition will be hosted by Singapore Management University.
