Freethinkers united

The more people working together to make a difference, the more likely it is to happen

This is something we genuinely believe in and care about, which is why we joined forces with Sunset Events. They care about making a difference as much as we do.

Sunset Events is the result of some seriously free thinking by Dave Chitty, who now holds the title of Managing Director and Promoter for Sunset Events. We asked him what was behind his inspired idea of combining music, art and environmental issues.

dave_177x177.jpg“I travelled a lot before I went to uni, and my love of music meant I ended up at a lot of events,” said Dave. “I really enjoyed being in that kind of space. I noticed that when people are in a good frame of mind, they’re open to a lot of new ideas. They’re generally more receptive to educating themselves, whether it’s through live art, visual art or understanding environmental messages.”

“I was inspired to take that back to my life at home, but not in a way that was too hippy-esque or Woodstock.”

Fast-forward to 2009 and Dave’s Freo based company is firmly established as a leader in Perth’s music and arts scene, with festivals such as Southbound, Blues ’n’ Roots and Groovin' The Moo thrown around as household names. Dave works on growing the business, dreaming up new projects and events, and working out how to make them happen.

The beginning of our partnership with Sunset Events

Meanwhile, another free thinker (our own Events and Sponsorships Manager Sally Fairnie) was looking to align Murdoch with some new partners who share our way of thinking. She found the Sunset Events website and instantly saw an excellent fit with our values.

“I met up with Georgia, who was at that time the Marketing and Sponsorship Director for Sunset Events, for breakfast in Freo,” said Sally. “I remember when one of us was talking, the other was always nodding their head saying ‘yes, yes’ and I think I knew then it could be an amazing opportunity. There were so many ideas just floating off that first meeting!”

Dave and the team at Sunset Events agree.

“Murdoch is pioneering so many great initiatives for the future, from sustainability to their progressive arts and media work,” said Dave. “It’s a great fit – we’re philosophically aligned. It’s fantastic to have an institution of Murdoch’s scale supporting what we’re trying to do.”
