Dr Peter Irwin

Associate Professor of Small Animal Medicine

Peter Irwin joined Murdoch University in 1998 after teaching at the veterinary schools at the University of Melbourne and in Malaysia. Peter is a registered specialist in Canine Medicine and sees referral cases by appointment in the Murdoch University Veterinary Hospital.

He teaches mainly in the 4th and 5th years of the veterinary degree course but is also actively involved in teaching postgraduate courses at Certificate and Masters levels by distance learning.

Peter's research interests are in infectious and parasitic diseases of dogs, cats and native mammals; he oversees Honours and Doctoral studies of vector-borne diseases of these species in Australia and in SE Asia.

Dr Bennett is a graduate of Murdoch University and spent the first half of her working life in general practice before training for specialist qualifications in Small Animal Medicine through the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists. She began her training as a Resident then Registrar at Melbourne University and completed her study while working at Murdoch University. Dr Bennett has held previous roles as Registrar and Senior Registrar at MUVH from 2007 to 2010. Her new role  as Lecturer, Small Animal medicine commenced in October 2010.

Dr Bennett’s clinical interests cover most aspects of internal medicine and her favourite patients are geriatric cats.

Senior Lecturer in Small Animal Medicine

Robert graduated from University College Dublin (UCD) in 1999. After four years in small animal practice in the United Kingdom, he returned to UCD to undertake a residency in small animal internal medicine, and obtained Diplomate status from the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 2007.

Having developed a strong interest in endocrinology during the residency programme, he completed a PhD in the field of canine thyroid function in 2010. Robert joined the small animal medicine team at Murdoch University in March 2011.

Robert’s main clinical and research interests are in endocrinology, neurology and genomics.

Senior Registrar in Small Animal Medicine and Oncology

Dr Fleur James has a special interest in medical oncology having spent dedicated time training in this area, including an Oncology Externship at the University of Liverpool.

Fleur is a Fellow of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists (ACVSc) - Small Animal Medicine, has recently passed her European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ECVIM) General exam and next year plans to achieve both Fellowship and Diplomate status with the ACVSc and ECVIM.

Fleur is also a member of the Australian Veterinary Association and Veterinary Cancer Society.

In 1994 Amanda graduated from the University of Sydney with honours in Geology. In 1999, after a dramatic career shift, she graduated from the University of Queensland with her Vet Science degree. After graduation Amanda worked in several private practices including mixed animal practice with a large greyhound clientele and as an emergency veterinarian.

While working in private practice she completed both a Masters degree and an acupuncture certification.  Amanda enjoys all aspects of Small Animal Medicine, but has a particular passion for neurology.
Linda_Tong

Resident in Small Animal Medicine
 Linda grew up in Adelaide and graduated from the University of Queensland in 2004. She began her career as a mixed animal veterinarian working with small animals, cattle and horses in the South Burnett region of QLD.

Linda soon developed a strong interest in small animal medicine and returned to South Australia in 2006 to pursue a career as a small animal veterinarian. In 2008, she completed a year long distance education course on Internal Medicine Problem Solving. In 2009, she obtained Memberships of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in Small Animal Medicine.

In further preparation towards residency training in Small Animal Internal Medicine, Linda consolidated her work in private practice with an 18 month stint in Brisbane prior to commencing a residency at Murdoch University in February 2011.

Linda has a special interest in cardiothoracic medicine, gastroenterology, immune mediated disease and endoscopy.

Resident in Small Animal Medicine
Dr Brown graduated from the University Of Sydney in 2002 and has worked in small animal practice both here in Australia and in England. She completed a graduate diploma in veterinary clinical studies in 2010 and also successfully attained membership of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in small animal medicine in the same year. After completing a rotating clinical internship at the University of Sydney she joined the team at Murdoch University Veterinary Hospital in January 2011 as a resident in small animal medicine.

Alexa enjoys all aspects of small animal internal medicine but has a particular passion for endocrinology.

Emma Coles

Nursing Coordinator - Small Animal Medicine
Registered Veterinary Nurse

 Emma is our Nurse Coordinator in Small Animal Medicine and Oncology. She I graduated from Applied Vocational Training in 2002 with her certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing. Emma worked in General Practice until the end of 2005, before starting work at Murdoch Pet Emergency Centre.

Most recently Emma has moved to the Medicine department to take on the role of Nurse Coordinator. Working with pets and helping nurse them back to health is the most rewarding part of her job. Since moving to the Medicine department she has discovered a passion for Oncology and enjoys being able to see our regular patients and forming a special bond with both them and their owners.

Emma Jordan

Emma graduated from Bentley TAFE with a certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing in December 2007. After working in Small Animal General Practice for 4 years she started working in the Medicine Department in August of 2011.

Emma says the best part about working at Murdoch in the Medicine Department is getting to see a wide variety of interesting cases and being part of such a great team. When Emma is not at work she likes spending my time with her 4 cats Velcro, Squirtle, Pebbles and Peanut as well as her dog Phoenix and Galah Bubba-Licious.
