About the School of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology
The School of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology is continually driving applied research that addresses significant issues in our local, state and regional communities.
Our staff members are committed to excellence, providing our undergraduate, Honours and postgraduate students with the skills and knowledge they need to contribute to a sustainable future. Our team maintain strong relationships with government agencies, major laboratories and state industry partners.
We work at a molecular level and also on whole eco-system projects, including:
- Centre for Forest Health – Our researchers are exploring ecosystem health in the face of climate change, working with the community and state agencies to understand diseases in the forest and forest management.
- Our post-harvest biosecurity laboratory – Our laboratory is the first Western Australian research and development facility dedicated to improving the quality of storing grain.
- Centre for Fish and Fisheries Research – One of our current projects involves a tracking program to study the endangered sawfish (Pristis microdon), and working with indigenous communities to protect and sustain the natural habitat of this fish.
- Our Forensic Biology and Toxicology course – Skills you will learn in this course are highly transferable enabling you to pursue a career in a wide range of areas in hospitals, medical research centres, agricultural departments, food processing companies and the pharmaceutical industry.
Our world-class facilities, including those at the State Agricultural Biotechnology Centre, allow students to gain valuable practical experience in the fields of biotechnology and biological science. Some of our major research centres include:
- Centre for Fish, Fisheries and Aquatic Ecosystem Research (CFFAER)
- Centre of Excellence for Climate Change Woodland and Forest Health (CECCWFH)
- Centre for Phytophthora Science and Management (CPSM)
- Centre for Rhizobium Studies (CRS)
- State Agricultural Biotechnology Centre (SABC)
