World Animal Day at Murdoch
The Murdoch Animal Welfare Society (MAWS) will host Murdoch University’s World Animal Day celebration on Wednesday, October 7.
Erica Honey, Founder of MAWS, said the University Veterinary School’s annual ceremony celebrates the special role animals play, particularly at Murdoch’s veterinary school and hospital.
World Animal Day guest speakers will include Perth Zoo Veterinarian Dr Cree Monaghan, WA Assistance Dogs’ Gwen Dasboroug, Cottesloe Animal Hospital’s Dr David Neck, and the RSPCA’s Richard Barry.
“The student interest group MAWS aim to provide a forum for the diplomatic and professional discussion and growth of animal welfare, on a local and global scale, in a veterinary context,” Ms Honey said.
“Some of the types of issues we cover are, for example, disaster management of animals, live export, domestic violence, issues with animals, managing stray populations in developing countries and Australia.
“For example, in response to the devastating bushfires in Victoria, MAWS began fundraising and collecting donations for the animal victims of these fires.
“To assist our Victorian colleagues, over 30 donations were collected from veterinary clinics, human hospitals and individuals in the vet school and community of Perth.”
