Pedalling Bike to Work Challenge

Pedalling Bike to Work Challenge

Murdoch University’s Bike to Work teams have already clocked up hundreds of kilometres in the Cycle Instead in Spring challenge and the School of Sustainability team is looking for more members to participate.

The Department of Transports’ challenge began on September 7 and will run until October 18, with teams tallying their kilometres each week.

Sustainability lecturers Nicole Hodgson and Peter Devereux, the coordinators of the School of Sustainability’s team, said the cycling initiative was a good way of encouraging people to leave their cars at home now winter is over.

“This is a great excuse to start cycling to work,” Mr Devereux said.

“There are extra prizes and benefits for teams that recruit new riders during the challenge, especially novice riders, and it’s free to enter.”

“Joining the challenge means there’s also the support of other riders, and it helps to keep up the motivation for riding.”

The team will be gathering at Club Murdoch on Wednesday, October 7, for a coffee and catch-up for those participating or interested in joining the group.

“We have 20 bike-to-workers now and we hope the more we publicise our group and this challenge, the more people we can encourage to cycle,” Ms Hodgson said.

The second Murdoch team, VB Pedal Power, has six bike-to-work participants.

Novice cyclists have the chance to win a new Avanti Bike valued at $600 retail.
