Marie Taylor
WHADJUCK/BALARDONG BIRDIYIA YOGKA

In this unique five-week, six-credit course, you’ll gain a Nyungar perspective on:

  • Wirnmut - spirituality, mythology, cosmology
  • Moort Keniny  - language, people/community, art, history, dancing, storytelling
  • Boodjah - meteorology, cartography.

What’s involved:

You’ll have the opportunity to go on field trips to places of cultural significance, such as Walyuap [Fremantle], Wadjemup [Rottnest Island] and Wardandi [Yallingup] during one of the most important of the Nyungar’s six seasons – Makuru [winter], when the rains signal the cleansing of land, river and ocean.

Along the way you’ll engage in comparisons of colonial and Indigenous discourse, perspectives and reflection.

Wanju-Boodjah Field Trips:

Rottnest Island

Western Australia's very own island getaway featuring a casual atmosphere, picturesque scenery and some of the world's finest beaches and bays, is located just 19 km off the coast of Fremantle.
Visitors can experience Aboriginal, European, colonial, maritime, military, recreational and social heritage on Rottnest Island, which to a certain extent is reflective of the development of the state of Western Australia.

Swan Valley

With rolling vineyards, art galleries, winding bush trails, national parks, tumbling waterfalls, heritage buildings, lakes, rivers and sweeping views, it’s no wonder the Swan Valley and Darling Range are such popular places to visit.

Yallingup

Located on the coast 264km south of Perth, Yallingup is a true get-away-from-it-all destination inhabited by surfers searching for the perfect wave and fishermen who, in May and June, fish for the salmon which make their spawning run along this section of the coast.
If you are of a romantic disposition you will probably believe that Yallingup really was the local Aboriginal word meaning “place of love”.
