Hana Schoon - Singapore

Senior Executive, Marketing Communications

Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication (Public Relations + Journalism) Graduate

“Murdoch impressed me with its teaching principles and flexibility in structuring my unit plan. Unlike other universities with rigid unit structures, Murdoch offers the flexibility in learning, so you can pick what interests you and complements your study goals.”

Hana took a double major in Public Relations and Journalism and was lucky enough to complete her degree in half the time, after Murdoch recognised prior study she had completed under a Diploma program in her home country, Singapore.

After graduation, Hana returned home to gain employment as a writer for a parenting magazine.

Today, Hana is a Senior Executive in Marketing Communications. Her responsibilities include all aspects of public relations, media relations and media coverage. She plans ahead for advertising and publicity needs. On the marketing side, Hana works on achieving better brand and product awareness for her company.

Choosing where to study

“When I was choosing a University to go to, it was a toss-up between the universities in WA and Queensland.”

“I ended up choosing Murdoch because I’d heard wonderful things about how the media programmes at Murdoch offered a fine balance between theoretical work and hands-on experience. “

“At the same time, I was looking for a smaller university that had an excellent track record in media and communication-related fields. Murdoch had the right fit.”

Life at Murdoch

During her first year at Murdoch, Hana was the Vice-President of The Singapore Link, a support group providing friendship and mutual support and making life at Murdoch University easier for new students.

“It was an honour to be able to serve the needs of fellow Singaporeans students overseas. While at Murdoch, I worked part-time at a fast food restaurant serving up burgers; and did various freelance-writing assignments and copywriting projects.”

“Undergrad life freed up much time to pursue my interests and explore Australia. I nailed that driver’s licence, dancing classes, did an open water dive course off Rottnest Island, and went on road trips around WA.”

“In between classes, we loved to bask at Bush Court, enjoying warm sunshine over a salad from the nearby refractory”
“Some of my best memories are of the simple things there – enjoying a latte, devouring a book, or going through my lesson notes before the next class. Sir Walter’s (basement of the library) was another great hangout. It later proved very conducive for project discussions or the last-minute cramming over Red Bull too!”

“Staying in Student Village, with its proximity to the main campus proved very convenient to zip in and out during breaks. Being surrounded by friends meant that dinner was never a quiet affair, and neither were those spare moments!”

Why Murdoch

“Unlike other universities with rigid unit structures, Murdoch offers the flexibility in learning, so you can pick what interests you and complements your study goals.”

“Compared to a few other universities, I liked Murdoch’s culture best for its genuine sense of warmth and friendliness from both the teaching and non-teaching staff.”

“At university, it was refreshing to be treated as an equal, not just a student. The lecturers encouraged different viewpoints, however alternative they were.”

“The one thing the lecturers all had in common was a friendly openness and a contagious passion – it’s hard not to be involved in even the driest subject when the person in front of you has so much enthusiasm for it!”

“The five star excellence in teaching rating says a lot! The teaching plans are structured and well thought-through, allowing room for personal growth and exploration.”

“On a personal level, I’ve met the most awesome people from all over the world at Murdoch. It’s a wonderful feeling to know you’re taken care of, miles away from home.”
