Can I use my work experience to get credits and exemptions on my course?

We often get asked the following question by students wishing to get credited for their previous work experience:
Q: I have heaps of work experience can I get exemptions?
Again this is based on a case-by-case scenario because everyone’s experience is unique.
Applying for Recognition of Prior learning in this instance is a bit like applying for a job. You will need to provide a cover letter, your Curriculum Vitae and a Statement. Before you speak to our Accreditation Officers download this outline of what you will need to provide and you should get an idea of whether or not your situation may qualify you for Recognition of Prior Learning.
Our Accreditation Officer Allan Wong, gives you this advice:
"If you are seeking exemption on the basis of your industry or work experience, you need to produce a comprehensive statement firstly identifying which unit you are seeking exemption from, then describing how you have met and achieved all the required learning outcomes and objectives of this unit through your work. Please contact the relevant unit-coordinator for a copy of the unit objective/syllabus as a reference. You will also need to provide some evidence of your work, or referee statements in support of your claims. You may submit all documentation to me (or Jenny Sceats if you are an International Student). We will then liaise with your Academic Chair who will review and determine whether you are eligible for the exemption"
