Executive Summary
Western Australia possesses a greater diversity and range of products within its regions than any other state in Australia (Tourism Western Australia, 2008). Each region contains unique features which appeal to intrastate, interstate or international visitors. Within the Hidden Treasures (HT) Region of the Great Southern these tourism activities and attractions vary considerably according to stage of development, market opportunities and capacity to accommodate additional visitation.
The Hidden Treasures Destination Management Strategic Plan identified the need to develop and promote tourism around ‘shared attractions’ in order to provide a platform for a competitive and sustainable tourism industry within the limited resources available to the Hidden Treasures communities.
Acknowledgement of the need to restructure working operations of the Hidden Treasures committee resulted from an evaluation of the existing management plan. Other significant areas identified include the need to inform residents of sustainable tourism opportunities, the impacts that tourism may bring, and the need for improved marketing; all were identified as key concerns.
The vision for the Destination Management Strategic Plan is to build awareness of the Hidden Treasures Region as a tourist destination by encouraging visitation and longer stays. The plan outlines five goals, with objectives, to be undertaken within the next five years in order to achieve the vision.
