Meet Dan Gardiner

Dan Gardiner was completing a physics degree at Murdoch and had some extra units available toward a double major.

Not thinking of career options, and instead completely following his passion, he chose to do the Sustainable Energy Management course.

Dan is now working at Engin an as an energy analyst, and is looking to do his masters in the future.

We asked Dan to share a few thoughts on his experiences…

Dan, tell us about…

  • How you managed to fit in extra study!

"As a mature age, external student with an 80+ hours job and a young family at home, I had a very unique set of challenges into which I had to fit studying.

All the staff at Murdoch were fantastic, not only in terms of providing the required help for the course but also motivational support when things started getting tough.

The lectures and tutorials for the SEM course were all available via the internet which made external study a lot easier."
  • What have you been up to since you left uni?

"I found a career with an energy efficiency/management consultancy called Enigin when I was still several months shy of receiving my degree.

This was done with the help of one of my university Professors. Enigin were happy to offer me the flexibility of part-time work until I had completed my studies."
  • What does your work involve?

"My current work as an energy analyst involves conducting energy audits on various different types of facilities to determine where energy is being wasted and what can be done to save on energy costs.

I am also involved in writing energy management plans for government departments as one of their SEDO requirements.

I will be completing a NABERS Assessor training course next month which will give me the qualification to assess buildings in terms of their energy/water efficiency and give them a Star Rating."
