About the School of Law

"It is important to create opportunities for students: opportunities to study overseas, to be exposed to different and various teaching methods, to discover what the world has to offer. For that reason, the programmes offered by the Law School are a world of opportunity."
- Gabriël A. Moens, Dean, School of Law
We asked our Dean to share some short thoughts on what makes the School of Law unique.
Gabriël A. Moens, tell us about...
- The most important thing for your staff to value:
"Our staff need to believe in the importance of 'internationalisation' in legal education. Murdoch Law School wants to train students who function effectively in the domestic and international legal arenas. The business of education is ensuring that participants are able to reach their potential, enabling them to enjoy a satisfying life and career."
- The one thing students should graduate from the school with:
"A very high level of written and oral communication skills."
- Some of the amazing things students have achieved since graduating:
"Graduates have served as Associates to various Australian courts or even worked for the International Court of Justice in the Hague. Others have become Magistrates or have become partners in prestigious law firms. A number of graduates have achieved high political office. A growing number are working for major internationals corporations in Australia, China and various other countries."
- The Summer Programme with the Università di Macerata in Italy:
"In June/July 2009, we conducted our first ever Summer Programme at the University of Macerata, in Italy. It was an unqualified success, with all places allocated within a few weeks. This exciting programme involves students studying European Union Law, International Intellectual Property Law and Comparative Law at the Law School of the University of Macerata, which has offered excellent legal education since 1290!”
- How students can contribute to Geneva’s International Human Rights programme:
"From 2010, students have an opportunity to study International Human Rights in Geneva, where there are opportunities to visit many international organisations. Students will study Refugee Law, International Human Rights Law; International Human Rights Organisations."
- Murdoch students studying Chinese Law at the City University of Hong Kong:
"As Peta McDougall, Corporate Centre Advisor, Woodside Energy Ltd, who attended the programme in January 2010 wrote: ‘This Chinese Law programme provides both students and people already working in the resources (or indeed any WA based services) industry, the opportunity to learn technical knowledge, business practices, and culture which is vital to carrying out business with China.""
- The national and international accreditations our Law graduates receive:
"Murdoch Law School is accredited by the Legal Practice Board for admission in Western Australia, the Legal Practice Board for Continuing Professional Development (CPD), Singaporean authorities for practice in Singapore, Malaysian authorities for practice in Malaysia, accredited for practice in Brunei Darussalam and accredited by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London."
