Aid the fight against crime with a Forensic Biology and Toxicology degree
Forensic science has become more exacting and sophisticated over recent years, often forming the critical component of a case in a court of law.
Our job is to help you become a first-class forensic biologists and toxicologist, by giving you the knowledge and understanding you'll need to gather, analyse and present scientific evidence in a court of law.
Gain a thorough grounding in molecular genetics and DNA profiling
You will learn how to apply the techniques of molecular biology to DNA profiling and gain hands-on experience in gas chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance and mass-spectrometry - all modern techniques associated with the detection of legal and illegal drugs and poisons.
You will also undergo thorough training in biochemistry, including aspects of drug metabolism, using case studies from past forensic investigations.
Develop your practical experience through our professional experience program
Our course also offers you opportunities to participate in a professional experience program focusing on crime scene investigation with the Western Australian Police (WAPOL). This experience will give you first-hand knowledge of real-life scenarios, helping prepare you for your first role on graduation.
Forensic biologists and toxicologist are more sought after than ever, especially since the establishment of the national database and increasing emphasis on monitoring blood and urine samples. Skills you learn on this course are also highly transferable enabling you to pursue a career in a wide range of areas in hospitals, medical research centres, agricultural departments, food processing companies and the pharmaceutical industry.
By completing a double major with Chemistry you will also be eligible for membership of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI).
