Criminology

Crime affects you, me and everyone in the community. But what makes a criminal and how should we, as a society, respond to this?
Criminology is the intriguing study of crime and responses to crime. In this course you will examine criminal law and how the criminal justice system operates, including a focus on the sentencing and disposition of offenders.

Criminology also covers the theories of criminology and the causes and maintenance of criminal behaviour, as well as an examination of the psychological factors which impact upon the criminal justice system.

When you study Criminology at Murdoch you will be introduced to the manner in which the criminal justice system interacts with, and addresses, criminological issues.

These issues include the causes of offending and theories of deviance, and the manner in which the criminal justice system addresses them. The role of criminal justice agencies, the courts, police and correctional officers will be studied, as will the theories and practises of sentencing.
