Two decades as Murdoch brand ambassador

Kuala Lumpur based alumnus (centre) finds leading the Malaysian Alumni Chapter a rewarding role.

Adrian Ong Mun Hoe (B Commerce 1998) has been President of the Murdoch Alumni Chapter in Malaysia since 2003. He has also added to his years of experience by working on the Malaysian Australian Alumni Council, the national organisation for Malaysian alumni associations of Australian universities and other institutions of higher learning.

Venturing to study in Perth in the late nineties, Adrian found his time in Perth a rewarding experience.

“I really enjoyed studying somewhere so far from home, making new friends and interacting with people from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Plus having the opportunity to broaden my education, increase my communication skills, be exposed to new lifestyles and explore new places that included a very different natural world,” he said.

Returning to Malaysia after graduation, Adrian took over managing the family business that sold cosmetics and skin care products. Established from scratch by his father, Adrian has followed in his footsteps, learned from his experience and used his commerce and management skills to develop the business.

In his spare time, he saw the Alumni Chapter as a great opportunity to stay connected to his alma mater, promote it in the region and make a difference through the community and charity events that the Chapter organise. Joining initially as a Chapter member in 1999, he became Vice President in 2000 and then commenced his term as President three years later. He enjoys the ambassadorial elements that the position brings.

“I enjoy staying connected to Murdoch and my alumni peers and sharing the passion of being part of the Murdoch Alumni community. As well as offering a sense of belonging, it gives us an opportunity to advance awareness of the flexible, quality education Murdoch offers, which hopefully gives it greater recognition and prestige amongst local Malaysians. In addition, the Chapter events offer regular opportunities to network and work with partners to develop new programs and collaborations.”
