The Chicago Author-Date referencing guide will be retired at the end of this year. The Library regularly reviews its services to ensure they continue to meet the needs of our learning and research community, and this reflects our decision to focus on Chicago’s more widely used Notes and Bibliography system. Recent editions of The Chicago Manual of Style place greater emphasis on the Notes & Bibliography system, resulting in fewer Author-Date examples being provided.

What this means

• Students instructed to use the Chicago Author-Date referencing style will be directed to the Chicago Author-Date Quick Guide or the Chicago Author-Date System overview. 
• The Library will no longer maintain an interpretive Chicago Author-Date guide.
• Where a Library supported Author-Date style is required, the APA Referencing Guide will be recommended as an alternative.
• The Library will continue to provide access to The Chicago Manual of Style for staff who wish to use Author-Date in their teaching and research.

Library Support

For disciplines wishing to switch from Chicago to APA style, the Library will work with them to help transition their materials to APA referencing style and update guidance materials as required. The following resources may also assist:
