Due to the recent release of the 18th edition of the Chicago Manual of Style, we have updated both our Chicago and Footnotes referencing guides with new or additional information.

See the updated guides below:

The most significant changes are as follows:

  • The names of both the Chicago and Footnotes referencing styles have changed
  • In both styles, place of publication is no longer needed when referencing books and book chapters
  • In both styles, month/season are no longer needed when referencing journal articles.

The Chicago Notes and Bibliography (previously Footnote) guide has also been updated with guidance for referencing:

  • Social media
  • Images.

We have also updated both the Chicago Author-Date and Chicago Notes and Bibliography guides with guidance for referencing:

  • Indigenous knowledge
  • AI generated content.
