Access to ScienceDirect content in 2026

Stack of newspapers on table

The Library wishes to advise that our agreement with Elsevier for ScienceDirect journal content will not be renewed for 2026. This is due to a lapse in negotiations between CAUL and Elsevier, and as a result, full-text access to most ScienceDirect journals will conclude at the end of 2025. We will, however, continue to provide full-text access to previously subscribed and purchased content:

  • Subscribed journals (152 titles, access up to and including 2025)
  • Previously purchased journal backfiles (473 titles)

Access to all purchased ebooks on ScienceDirect will remain unchanged. You will also continue to be able to search the platform and view article abstracts for all titles. For a complete list of subscribed and purchased journal titles, please refer to this title listing

CAUL has paused negotiations with Elsevier but remains open to further discussions should a model be proposed that meets collective requirements. For more information, please see the press releases from CAUL and Universities Australia.

During this period, the Library is committed to supporting teaching staff and researchers and will work proactively to minimise any impact on teaching, learning, and research.

Support for Teaching staff

The Library will proactively identify ScienceDirect articles in My Unit Readings lists and source either open access copies or request copies from other libraries as soon as possible, prioritising summer and trimester units.

What you can do:

  • Ensure your selected readings are available in My Unit Readings
  • Consider alternative sources when updating your reading lists

Support for Researchers

The Library will identify Murdoch authors who publish with Elsevier, especially those involved in the Read & Publish agreement, and will reach out to offer advice and support.

To ensure you maintain access to important research papers, you can:

  • Request the library source a copy from another library.
  • Search for open access papers and research. See our guide on how to use Library Search and the Unpaywall extension for seamless access.
  • Scholarly sharing – colleagues in your field may have access to similar research.

For any questions or concerns, please submit a Library enquiry
