Using Library Search

Library Search is the easiest way to search the Library’s print and digital resources from a single search box. It's a quick way to locate items you may already have details about or a useful tool when you need to find high quality resources on a topic.

Whilst Library Search covers nearly all our resources, you may need to use Databases when you need to find comprehensive or specialised information in your subject area, for example, selected law resources, statistics, company information and very recent newspaper articles. Quick Search

Use Library Search to find resources on a topic, or to quickly locate a resource you may already have details about. You can search for:

Click on a title in your results to go directly to the resource, or to more details if it is a citation. Depending on your search you may also see links for related databases and resources, subject definitions or suggested searches. If you are off campus, be sure to log in via the top banner link to access more results.

Improving your results

Use these techniques to improve your results list.

Information specific to a disciplineUse the ‘Discipline’ options to narrow by a particular field. For example, 'differentiation' is a concept in both mathematics and economics and will produce a different set of results.
Information specific to a subject
Use the 'Subject Terms' options to narrow by a particular subject or topic. For example, search for 'ptsd' and use the 'Subject Terms' list to filter by topics such as 'treatment' or 'symptoms'
Variations of a keyword
Use the asterisk (*) wildcard to match zero or more characters within a word or at the end of a word. For example, results for ‘adolescen*’ will include adolescent, adolescents, adolescence.
Differences in spelling of a keyword
Use the question mark (?) wildcard to match a single character. For example, results for ‘organi?ation’ will find both organisation and organization.
A phrase
Use quotation marks around your phrase, for example “global warming”.

You can also use the connectors AND, OR and NOT to improve results when doing a search using two or more keywords.

When to use...
How it improves your results
AND
Using AND between two keywords will narrow your results to include both keywords. This should give you a smaller set of results. For example, 'climate change AND australia' will bring back results about climate change related to Australia. Library Search uses AND by default when you do a keyword search.
OR
Using OR between two keywords will broaden your results to include either keyword. Generally, this will give you a larger set of results. For example, 'climate change OR australia' will bring back results on climate change and results on Australia.
NOT
Using NOT between two keywords will narrow your results by excluding a keyword. Generally, this will give you a smaller set of results. For example, 'climate change NOT australia' will bring back results on climate change but not related to Australia.

Advanced Search and other features

Advanced SearchAdvanced Search is useful when you know the limits you want to set on results prior to your search. You can preset to narrow your results by content type, date, discipline, full text or language whilst searching within specific fields, for example, by author, title, volume or issue. Save/export resultsLibrary Search can print, email or export a list of selected items from a results list. Clicking the 'Save this item' icon to the right of each result item adds it to a folder at the top right of the screen.
RSS AlertsSet up RSS feeds so you can be notified when results for searches are updated. Right click the RSS icon, near the sort function on the results screen, then copy and paste the URL into your preferred RSS reader.
Saved searchesThe Saved search function is an easy way to retain a list of your favourite searches and so you can continue your research in a future session. Click the star icon in the search bar to save a search. Your list of saved searches an be accessed by the icon near ‘New Search’ and retained with a Google or Microsoft account.
Web of Science & Scopus citationsWeb of Science and Scopus links will lead you to articles that cite or reference your current article.
Add results beyond our collectionYou can also search for resources outside our collection by selecting the 'Add results beyond Murdoch University Library's collection'. If you find an item where full text is unavailable, you may then be able to request it using BONUS+, ArticleReach or Document Delivery.
