Understanding equine health issues

The equine medicine service offers medical investigation of, and solutions to a wide variety of complex problems in horses, including:

  • Endocrine disease
  • Gastrointestinal disease
  • Renal/urinary disease
  • Heart disease
  • Respiratory disease
  • Liver disease
  • Neuromuscular disease
  • Muscular disease
  • Immune-mediated disease
  • Skin disease
  • Eye disease

We utilise the latest techniques and equipment during the diagnostic investigation and treatment processes. Our specialised medical equipment includes:

  • Video endoscopy with a range of different sized flexible video endoscopes, including overground (dynamic/exercising) endoscopy and portable gastroscopy.
  • Electrocardiography (including exercising monitoring using Televet and Equimetre), echocardiography and transvenous electrocardioversion of atrial fibrillation.
  • Lameness Locator
  • Pulmonary function testing
  • Ophthalmic examination including tonometery and biomicroscopy
  • Specialist diagnostic imaging on site including ultrasonography, digital radiography, standing computed tomography (CT) and standing MRI
  • Diode laser.
  • Full laboratory support. Many of our cases require a wide range of laboratory tests. Most of these tests are performed at our newly equipped, on-site laboratory so that vital information is available as soon as possible. In addition, many tests can be performed ‘stall-side’, ensuring rapid turnaround times for the sickest of horses.
  • Fully equipped intensive care unit (ICU) providing 24h critical care support including a dedicated Isolation Unit, separate from the main barn. Intensive care stalls are equipped with fluid delivery systems, oxygen and CCTV cameras.
  • Neonatal ICU including oxygen therapy, ventilation and respiratory support
  • On-site blood donors
