‘Walking the talk’ in sustainability is about being true to the University's founding values and being a role model, partner and support for others through teaching, research and engagement.
Through the process of developing the university's inaugural Sustainability Sub-Strategy, we identified six key priority areas, and four core activities to focus our efforts toward becoming a center of excellence for sustainability in our teaching, research and operations.
We aspire to deliver a truly sustainable campus – with our main South Street Campus as the key initial focus. For a full list of planned actions, see our Sustainability Implementation Plan.

Key priority areas
Actions we are undertaking across these six key priority areas are focusing our efforts toward greening our operations.
Everyone at Murdoch plays a role in supporting a sustainable future. Join us in making a positive impact and fostering a culture of sustainability for future generations.
Actions we are taking:
- Detailed investigations into additional installation of on-site renewable energy systems and alternative ways to reduce emissions from electricity.
- Precinct refurbishment developments under the Campus Development Plan, including energy efficiency upgrades.
- Enhanced submetering of buildings and ongoing energy monitoring and consumption analysis.
Actions you can take:
- Switch off or unplug unused devices (except for printers), lights and heating/ cooling in unoccupied spaces and at the end of the day. A quick check before you leave a room or an office is all it takes.
- When possible, set air conditioning (AC) systems between 22-24 degrees. This keeps spaces comfortable and helps AC units work most efficiently.
- Consider ways to reduce your digital footprint: think critically about your use of AI and the environmental impact of online habits.
Actions are we taking:
- Adopting the principles of a circular economy, prioritising strategies to prevent/avoid waste in the first place.
- Reviewing our procurement practices and implementing sustainable procurement principles.
- Improving waste management practices to minimise waste to landfill and expand recycling streams.
- Could mention sustainable events guidelines here and provide a link
Actions you can take:
- Bring your reusables to campus: water bottles, hot beverage cups, containers & utensils.
- Save money with reusables: We have free water fountains across campus with chilled and filtered water, so you can save money, stay hydrated and waste free.
- Learn more about Circularity and How to Recycle by watching these short videos or visit Recycle Right for Western Australia specific information on recycling.

Did you know? Murdoch University's Perth campus is one of the largest University campuses in Australia, with approximately 83 of the 273 hectares managed for biodiversity conservation and wildlife habitat. This includes two Conservation Category Wetlands and a large reserve of Banksia Woodlands, recognised as a Threatened Ecological Community (TEC). Our Perth campus is also home to endemic and threatened plant and animal species, including Quendas (Southern Brown Bandicoots), Karrak (Forest Red-tailed Black Cockatoo) and Ngoolarks (Carnaby’s Black Cockatoos).
Actions we are taking:
- We have made an institutional pledge under Nature Positive Universities to restore and protect ecosystems on campus.
- We are currently developing our Biodiversity Baseline and refreshing our Biodiversity Management Plan to ensure we have a clear plan to support and enhance biodiversity on campus and beyond.
- Working closely with our Grounds Team to improve habitat for wildlife within the built environment.
- Our Sustainable Farm Sub-Strategy outlines key actions to minimise the impact of the South Street farm operations to the surrounding bushland and to improve biodiversity outcomes in and around the farm.
Actions you can take:
- Volunteer with our planting and weeding events open for staff and students at the South Street campus each year between May and October. Email sustainability@murdoch.edu.au to register your interest or join the Murdoch Environmental Restoration Group (MERG) student club to get involved.
- Our Banksia Woodland and Chelodina Wetland reserves are open to the public and is always a welcome escape. Visit Explore our walks and trails for more information and maps. Please observe bushfire safety measures and dieback protocols. Avoid accessing our bushland reserves during bushfire season (December to April). For more information, visit Bushfire safety | Murdoch University.
- Support our wildlife on campus: Observe campus road and car park speed limits and protect the native animals we are lucky enough to share our campus with, such as Quendas, Black Cockatoos and many more. Observe and appreciate from a distance and do not feed them.
H5 Bird Flu Protocols. Found a sick or dead animal on campus?
STOP
Do not touch the animal. Stay at least 5 metres away and keep other people and pets well clear.
RECORD
Note where it is, what it looks like, how many animals, and the time. Photos from a distance only if it is safe.

Actions we are taking:
- Improvements to farm management practices as part of the Sustainable Farm Sub Strategy to reduce groundwater consumption and maximise water retention.
- Ongoing groundwater quality and consumption monitoring
- Ongoing comprehensive leak detection and repair programme through smart metering and water saving practices. Check out this case study showing our collaboration with Water Corporation for more information.
Actions you can take:
- Did you know? Due to climate change, Perth’s average annual rainfall has reduced around 20% since the 1970s. With a growing population and reduced rainfall recharging our dams, being water-wise is one of the most impactful things everyone can do. To find out more visit Water Corporation-Climate and Perth.
