Welcome event for new Veterinary Medicine students

Group of people celebrating open day

During O-Week, the School of Veterinary Medicine hosted a special welcome event for new students entering the veterinary science course.

This event welcomed first-year students, those transferring into the second year from other courses, international students, and Waardong students.

Dr. Barb Hostalek, the Academic Chair of the Waardong program, the School’s First Nations pathway, led the event. A highlight was the Welcome to Country, including a Kepa Walbraaniny (water ceremony) led by Noongar elder, Aunty Marie Taylor and her daughter. Aunty Marie a Whadjuk and Ballardong Noongar Elder shared how important “sharing culture and working together was for the health of land (boodjar), people and animals and it couldn’t be done without veterinary medicine Doctors. She was honoured to share Noongar language and her ancient culture with continuing and new staff and students.”

Student leaders from the Murdoch Veterinary Students Association also spoke, sharing insights about the vibrant veterinary student community at Murdoch and emphasising how involvement makes the course much more enjoyable, and improves student well-being.

We extend a big, warm welcome to all the new students! We are thrilled to have you join the School of Veterinary Medicine at Murdoch University.
