Murdoch University veterinary science student Eden Burns has been named a 2026 AgriFutures Horizon Scholar, supported by Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA).

Growing up in Kununurra in Western Australia’s Kimberley region, Eden developed a strong connection to the northern cattle industry and an appreciation of the importance of veterinary services to regional and remote communities. Her interests include disease surveillance, biosecurity and preventative herd health, with a focus on improving livestock welfare while supporting the productivity and resilience of northern Australia’s livestock industries.

The AgriFutures Horizon Scholarship supports students studying in areas aligned with the future of Australian agriculture, helping them build industry experience, skills and networks. Through the scholarship, Eden is looking forward to gaining experience that will support her ambition to contribute to a more proactive and resilient approach to animal health across northern Australia. Her selection is a wonderful recognition of her commitment to rural and regional veterinary practice and highlights the important role the next generation of veterinarians will play in supporting the future prosperity of Australia’s agricultural industries and communities.
