A day in the life of an IT student

IT is where you can flex both your creative and intellectual muscle. As a student you might:

  • Develop ideas in our new IT Innovation Hub.
  • Get a better understanding of network engineering in our campus data centre.
  • Prepare for industry certification exams so you can work anywhere in the world.
  • Work on real-world projects as part of your degree.
  • Develop virtual reality systems in the new immersive space.

You’ll keep pace with the IT industry and developing trends, and gain creative skills to feel confident in our abilities to tread your own path.

“It made me feel like a hacker and a detective at the same time.”

The Murdoch difference

Our graduates have achieved some amazing feats and developed technology that’s made a real impact on people’s lives and the world. These include ‘games’ that help patients with burns get moving again, and tools for medical professionals to treat patients in remote areas. Some of our students have even gone on to be nominated for national and international awards.

Information Technology Innovation Hub

The IT Innovation Hub is the first of its kind in a Western Australian university, and it’s where you’ll go to gain hands-on learning, work with other students from all IT specialisations, and have the freedom to get creative. It’s made up of four key areas: mixed and augmented reality studio, data networking operations centre, cyber security and networking labs, and student training and research lounge.

This cutting-edge teaching, learning, and research facility has labs with 24/7 walk-in access, $2M data centre, and specialist labs for cyber security, internetworking and networking, computer science and games technology. We also have industry-grade infrastructure, and a brand new digital immersive lab where students design and build a range of VR Projects.

We’re #1 in Australia for student support for Computing and Information Systems.

Courses in a wide range of IT specialisations

Our 25-strong academic team provides a vast array of talent to our courses that allows students room to move toward the area they’re interested in.

Flexible study options

You’ll have the opportunity to combine double majors or select desired elective units outside of the School of IT.

Beyond the classroom

It’s not just on-campus where you’ll gain invaluable skills. Off-campus opportunities include:

  • Professional practice projects: Consult with real clients about their business problems and then develop and implement new technologies to solve them.
  • Scholarships: We are partnered with the Westpac Bicentennial Foundation’s Young Technologists Scholarship Program. You could receive $15,000 toward your studies.
  • Study abroad: Head overseas with fellow students for two to six weeks.
  • Study exchange: Push yourself out of your comfort zone and study at one of our partner universities for one or two semesters.

Choose your adventure: which degree and major will you pick?

Will you become a designer creating concepts, rules, and characters for games to be played on range of devices? Maybe you’ll develop meticulously-planned software, proudly watching your work flow seamlessly? Could you see yourself working on the Internet of Things? Or do you see the stream of hacking incidents that have hit Australia’s biggest corporations and know you could do a great job managing cyber security? Perhaps you’re a detail-oriented person who finds it satisfying to everything organised and you’d love internetworking and Big Data?

Our Bachelor of Information Technology offers six majors. Take a double major if you’re interested in more than one area or apply for a double degree (for example, the popular Law-Information Technology combination) to expand your options. Get to know our school and courses in further detail.

We have a QS Five-star rating for learning resources, student support and teaching quality for Computing and Information Systems.
