Second-Year DVM Students Thrive at Annual Camp

This year’s Vet Camp for 2nd Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) students proved to be an inspiring experience—one that continues to shape the next generation of veterinarians both professionally and personally.

Held annually, Vet Camp is carefully designed to support the core learning outcomes of the DVM program, centring on the development of productive relationships, bolstering psychological resources, and fostering a deep sense of professional commitment. All activities at the camp are grounded in reflective practice, helping students develop self-awareness.

Participants engaged in a diverse mix of activities, from personal strengths identification exercises to collaborative team challenges. Each task was structured to encourage students to recognise their individual behavioural styles and then apply those insights within a group context. These experiences—equal parts mentally stimulating and physically engaging—contributed to a lively, supportive atmosphere brimming with camaraderie and personal growth.

A particular highlight of the camp was the yarning circle led by Uncle Koodah and Uncle Brett, Indigenous elders who shared their stories and wisdom with the group. This session offered a meaningful opportunity for students to connect with Indigenous perspectives, exploring concepts of culture, community, and caring for Country. By weaving together tradition and contemporary learning, the camp reaffirmed the importance of a holistic approach to practice.

The 2025 camp saw the largest group yet of dedicated staff and veterinary community volunteers who generously donated their time and expertise. Their involvement was instrumental in delivering a seamless and enriching program, and as always, many took away new insights themselves.

We are very grateful for the ongoing support from Hills Pet Nutrition, whose sponsorship helps ensure the camp’s continued success. The School of Veterinary Medicine and our future veterinarians thank you all for your dedication and partnership.

Vet Camp remains a cornerstone of our DVM program, cultivating community, reflective practice, and professional growth for students and staff alike.
