Bring real DNA science into your classroom
Murdoch University’s biotechnology loan kit program gives schools access to research-grade equipment and authentic DNA investigations, ready to run with your students.
Biotech Out of the Box 2.0 brings back Murdoch University’s iconic biotechnology program for regional and metropolitan high schools across Western Australia. The program trains science teachers and lab technicians to deliver a range of lessons using the kits, which can be sent to schools anywhere in the state.
The curriculum-aligned program, designed for years 7 to 12, includes ready-to-run investigations matched to each kit.
Biotech Loan Kits
KIT 1 – Demonstration
Teacher-led PCR and electrophoresis. Perfect for introducing DNA concepts.
KIT 2 – Electrophoresis Class Set
Students create and analyse DNA profiles. Ideal for genetics and forensics studies.
KIT 3 – PCR + Electrophoresis Class Set
Full DNA workflow: amplification and analysis. Most suited to senior biology and extension programs.Kits include all of the equipment and reagents required to run the experiments with your students. They also include handy guides for students to ensure correct lab techniques and safety. Features include:
- Compact size
- No power pack required - all apparatus run on 240 volts
- Uses fewer consumables i.e. 20 ml gel, not 50 ml
- Approved for Aust schools
- SD sheets available for all reagents
- Electrophoresis – smartphone time-lapse/photographs
- PCR – programmed via phone/tablet/laptop; used globally in the field/ISS)
Deposit
The kits are free to hire, but require a refundable deposit to cover the replacement of lost or irreparably damaged equipment. Murdoch University covers damage incurred in transport. The Biotech out of the Box loan agreement will have the full details. Deposits are as follows:
Kit 1 - Demonstration $500.00
Kit 2 - Electrophoresis Class Set $1000.00
Kit 3 - PCR + Electrophoresis Class Set $1500.00
Teacher Training
Key to the program is a one-day training workshop for teachers and lab technicians. It develops educator skills in biotechnology techniques and running experiments. Training is delivered in person and must be completed by at least one teacher and one lab technician before the kit can be supplied.
Training sessions are run at Murdoch University throughout the year. Upcoming teacher training sessions are as scheduled:
Monday 20th June at Murdoch University
Bookings are essential - register now using the form linked below.
Student Outcomes
The experiments within these kits can be used in a number of popular science programs, including:
- WA Barcode Blitz (DNA Barcoding)
- Koala Diet Demystified
- Cystic Fibrosis Carrier Conundrum
- Wildlife Detectives Investigation
Students learn skills and techniques prioritised within the Australian Curriculum, including:
With access to biotechnology tools, student have the opportunity to discover their passion for DNA processing, barcoding, and investigation. It could set them on the path to a career in forensic science, personalised medicine, advanced agriculture, or bioinformatics.
Students can see and compare the results of their experiments through the production of extracted DNA, gel electrophoresis results, and DNA profile outputs. Through programs such as the WA Barcode Blitz, student can contribute their data to national biological databases as citizen scientists.
